Shadow a Student

Build empathy with students and unlock new ways to solve problems

Do you have what it takes to be a student?

As a leader or teacher, you interact with students every day. But do you know what it’s really like to walk a mile in their shoes? Can you remember what it’s like to catch a bus, wear a uniform, sit quietly in classes you just weren’t into, and juggle a diverse workload while trying to negotiate social relationships – all while getting to know your place in the world?

Shadowing a student is an exercise that helps you build empathy and gain insight into the student experience. It’s as simple as it sounds: follow a student for a day (or longer), doing what they do, going where they go, and seeing what they see. This process has the ability to unlock new ways of seeing how your school works and build a sense of shared experience with those in your care.

Visit the Shadow a Student website to find out more, download the toolkit to get started immediately, or view all of the resources below – including vlogs from #Passion4Learning teachers who took on the challenge themselves!
