Rich Tasks at Iona
Iona Presentation College puts Challenge-based Learning into action
What is a Rich Task?

Stemming from the Social Science Department, the Rich Task is a cross-curricular activity for Year 8 students that focuses on a specified one of the three West Australian cross-curriculum priorities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures; Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia; and sustainability.

These three priorities aim to help equip students with the skills, knowledge and understanding that will help them to prosper in a globalised world.
The Rich Task provides opportunities to extend student learning to ‘learn without grading’. Year 8 students come ‘off timetable’ for two weeks at the end of the year in order to collaborate, diversify, invent and generate a project of their choosing. Culminating in a display in the Sports Centre, students are engaged, active and thoroughly committed to their activities.
Students must undertake an investigation on the broad topic area, develop and submit a project proposal prior to the two week period, and then complete their Rich Task project. A daily diary and student reflection are also part of the process. All Year 8 teachers are involved throughout the two weeks in areas of mentoring, supervision and assistance where required.
