Design thinking for Catholic Education Western Australia

Welcome to the LEARN online hub. LEARN is Catholic Education Western Australia’s Design Thinking process for educators. Everything you need to practice LEARN in your own classroom is here.
Why LEARN?
The world is changing rapidly and dramatically. Our society will be transformed over coming decades by new technology.
Almost two-thirds of Australian students are being trained for jobs that will vanish or look completely different in the future.
65% of private school students already experience difficulty in their first year of university. They are not being prepared well enough for their next step.

Our students will need skills to solve problems in the future that no one has seen before. They are also passionate and curious. As educators, how can we help them prepare for this future by harnessing their natural passion and curiosity?

Design thinking is creative process that helps students design meaningful solutions to existing problems.

It helps students become lifelong learners by teaching them the flexibility, empathy, collaborative skills, creativity, independence, deep thinking and problem-solving skills they will need for their future vocations.

Learn. Look at your surroundings.
What bothers you? What should change?
Explore. Engage the people affected. Interview, shadow and observe them to empathise with them.
Aim. Explore ideas for creating the quickest impact for the most people and making long-lasting change.
Refine. Prototype and refine your idea. Allocate resources and put your idea into action.
Now reflect. What did you learn about your plan?
Your teammates? Yourself? How will you sustain impact?

What are our students saying?

I like doing projects because we got to ask our school community what they wanted.

Emma

This has been a fascinating process. It's really helped me learn about what I might want to do with my life.

Joe

It was so good because we did it ourselves and we are just kids!

Daisy

I got to speak to real people in my community and solve real problems. I've never felt so engaged in a school activity.

Teena
Max

I enjoy learning provided I have an interest in the topic!

Hayley

Usually I find school really boring. This was different though.
